PLAY DESCRIPTION

TRUTH ON TRIAL THE BALLAD OF SOJOURNER TRUTH  examines the life, literature, trials and times of Sojourner Truth against the backdrop of a modern-day university committee tasked with naming a new library after a person of color from the region. Issues of Affirmative Action and equity fly through the committee, interposed with actual events and historical characters from her life, including examinations of her famous 'Ain't I a Woman' speech.

Note from Playwright: TRUTH ON TRIAL: THE BALLAD OF SOJOURNER TRUTH was named the winner of the 21st Century National Playwrights Festival in New York City.

In over twenty years of research that took me to collections and sites all over America, I found no better resource than 'Sojourner Truth: Slave, Prophet, Legend,' by Pulitzer-Prize winning historian Carleton Mabee and his daughter Susan Mabee Newhouse.
