The Human Condition and Other Jokes - The Monologist

Palm Springs, California

MONOLOGUE DESCRIPTION

Time: Contemporary

Situation: This may be a professor teaching a class, an expert addressing an audience--really any intellectual showing off how smart they are. The Monologist quotes Blaise Pascal and then offers humorous variations on how the statement could be understood in the modern world.

Subject Matter: Philosophy, Futility, Meaninglessness, Dark Humor, Modern life, Absurdity

Note from Playwright: Pascal's image of the condemned men is one of the most striking and heart-rending passages in Western philosophy. Malraux used it for a scene in his famous 20th-century novel "Man's Fate." I decided to craft a number of passages modeled on it but drawn from modern life in order to show its continuing relevance to the world today, but in an amusing way.

Supplemental Information:  For more information on the philosopher Blaise Pascal, visit https://www.iep.utm.edu/pascal-b/.
