SPECIAL NEEDS - Charlotte

Gurnee, Illinois

PLAY DESCRIPTION

A brilliant, creative teenager with autism and his family are all in the special needs trenches as Pierce fights to balance his fascinating inner reality with getting over the hurdles of daily life.

MONOLOGUE DESCRIPTION

Time: Contemporary

Situation: Charlotte, who is a brash, funny, loving, overweight mom of a special needs son named Pierce, is talking to her best friend (also the parent of a special needs teen) about completely losing it with her judgmental sister-in-law at Sunday family dinner.

Subject Matter: Parenting, Weight, Family, Special Needs, Autism

Note from Playwright: I am a parent of a special needs son and wrote this play to explore the challenges, heroism and unique rewards for being in a special needs family. The bravery and humor of the other parents I've met in my journey inform this entire play. Charlotte has oodles of moxie, loyalty, and great humor. She's that friend you want next to you in the foxhole. She also struggles with stress eating...which is addressed in the monologue. I like creating opportunity for actors of all shapes and sizes. So with this monologue, it is a plus if you are a plus!

Supplemental Information: SPECIAL NEEDS was produced by Magnetic Theatre (2018), Clockwise Theatre (2011). Finalist Christopher Brian Wolk Award. Semi-finalist in the Dorothy Silver Playwriting Competition.
