Penance - Ethel

Tarzana, CA

MONOLOGUE DESCRIPTION

Time: Contemporary

Situation: Ethel is at her weekly church confession with Father Francis. She begins complaining about how her friend Agnes had borrowed money and not paid her back and then confesses she may have inappropriately touched a young man in her apartment complex. As she talks, we learn that she is sad, lonely and alienated from her daughter.

Subject Matter: Aging, Religion, Family, Loneliness

Note from Playwright: I wrote this piece because I work with so many wonderful older actors, but there's not much out there for them. Though the character may not be the happiest, I believe it is a fun role for an actress to play.
