Gowns - Patient

Author Randy Hale

MONOLOGUE DESCRIPTION

Time: Contemporary

Situation: A woman is at her breast surgeon's office for a post- surgery appointment for breast cancer. She's gowned, sitting on the exam table, and he asks her opinion on the new gowns the hospital is planning to order. He probably wants to chat, to put her at ease, but the effect is anything but.

Subject Matter: Breast Cancer, Medicine, Doctor-Patient Relationship, Compassion, Suffering, Survival

Note from Playwright: This happened to me in my doctor's office when he was checking my surgery post mastectomy for breast cancer. I know he was trying to be nice, but I couldn't believe how clunky this brilliant surgeon was relationship-wise. But I couldn't say anything because he holds the scalpel. I needed to have him like me. And it made me a little mad.
